Dr. Martens: The Hieronymus Bosch Collection

Dr. Martens: The Hieronymus Bosch Collection The brand adopts the artwork for SS14.

‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ was painted by Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch between 1490 and 1510; since 1939 it has been housed at Madrid’s Museo del Prado. For SS14 however, Dr. Martens plants the renowned piece at the feet of leather boot fans.

Using elements of the three panel work – an illustrative interpretation of morals and religion, the left side presenting Adam and Eve, the right a hellscape – the brand retranslates the work as a print, adopted by the ‘Heaven’ 3-eye shoe, the ‘Hell’ 8-eye boot and two satchels.

Like their original floral design that became almost iconic in the late 90’s, and the collaborations with Liberty that have since followed, the use of such a print portrays a different side of the brand, a subculture removed from the punk credentials the classic black boot carries, almost softer in its aesthetic despite the heavy content.
