'She Is Beyond Good And Evil' (Original Unreleased Version)
Bristol has always been a harbour town, with the area resounding to remarkably diverse and cosmopolitan influences.
In the mid 70s, the area boasted crews of young kids who dressed up in flamboyant clothes, danced to jazz funk and attended local blues parties thrown by the Afro-Caribbean community.
Eager for the next fix, when punk came along they simply hopped on board - keeping their own distinctive and deeply local flavour, of course.
This is, in essence, the scene from which sprang *The Pop Group*. A legendary punk-funk collective, the band fused left wing politics with Captain Beefheart, punk riffs with a rhythm section who could move between Gil Scott-Heron and Augustus Pablo.
A resurgent version of The Pop Group are set to head back out on tour this Autumn, and to celebrate Clash is able to unveil something very special from the vaults.
'She Is Beyond Good And Evil' is one of the band's calling cards, a collision of spiky, post-punk guitars, pleading vocals and some stunning bass playing.
The original - unreleased, until new compilation 'Cabinet Of Curiosities' arrived - version was produced by Roxy Music's Andy MacKay and we're delighted to have it on the site. A little rougher (if that's possible) than the version you are no doubt familiar with, it's no less inspiring.
Once again: "Western values mean nothing to her..."
The Pop Group have confirmed plans for a full Autumn tour, is support of Campaign Against The Arms Trade:
