Listen to a track from their expanded album reissue…London enveloper-pushers *Breton* are soon to release an expanded version of their second LP, ‘War Room Stories’ (*review*). Issued on the band’s own Cut Tooth label alongside Believe Recordings, the two-disc edition features 11 bonus tracks including two brand-new cuts, ‘Titan’ and ‘Parthian Shot’.
What we have here is another of the bonus disc’s selections, ‘Exit Row’. Of the track, vocalist Roman Rappak says:
“This was a song I wrote on my own when I was squatting on Bedford Square, in a house near Oxford Street. It was a huge, multi-million pound house in the centre of London, but I missed being in south London where no one bothered you… and I was there all on my own. We were in-between labels and I was ending a relationship, and a little lost.
“‘Stop me if you think there’s any way that you could be responsible / Stop me if you think there’s particles of skin that could tie you here.’
“It’s about the way you leave your mark on a person in the same way you leave DNA behind you everywhere you go. The deciding factor for going with Believe (Recordings) was probably when they came round to Bedford Square.
“I used a Kalimba, bought from this guy who hand makes them.
“‘They covered highs and lows and paraphrased what they missed out’ – this line is about the attention that Breton was getting in the press, and what people expected from our second album.”
