Listen: Mr Mitch - 'Don't Leave' Exquisitely etched grime melancholia...

There's often a sadness, a sense of loss at the heart of grime.

Perhaps that's due to the environment the scene was spawned in; the lack of opportunity, the manner in which British society is so keen to sweep the have-nots away from the central narrative.

It's there in seminal instrumental 'Functions On The Low', it's reflected in Zomby's work, in Last Japan and it's definitely there in the new EP from *Mr Mitch*.

The Gobstopper Records boss has turned tail, inverting his soundsystem rinse outs in favour of something more explicitly soulful.

'Don't Leave' is forthcoming on Planet Mu, with the producer dealing in chrome-plated tear drops. The title cut is online now, all gauzy synths, mournful tempos and that aching vocal sample.

*The FADER* premiered the track, and spoke to Mr Mitch about its genesis: "I don't know why, because everything is going well in my love life but the music that seems to connect with me the most is that of real heartbreak. Maybe there's a parallel version of me that's having a really shitty time and it just comes through in the music."
