Tambu itself, meanwhile, is a music of protest crafted by slave communities, retaining African influence but also absorbing elements of the new world.
A new group, Kuenta i Tambu follow in this tradition. Matching African rhythms to blunt electronics, chopped up guitar lines to chanted vocals, it's a sound which sits in the billowing cross-currents between old and new.
