While contemporary artist Takashi Murakami counts Louis Vuitton circa Marc Jacobs and ‘Graduation’ era Kanye West as previous collaborators, Vans ‘Vault by’ line similarly has partnered with big guns like Disney – with whom elsewhere this season the brand reconnects – The Beatles and Gosha Ruchinskiy.
That the two – Murakami and Vans – have now linked for an AW15 collection (available from the end of the month), predictably spells big things.
A translation of the Japanese artist’s ‘Superflat’ concept by way of Vans’ Classic Slip-On (a style he reportedly dons daily), the capsule footwear collection boasts three different prints spread out across six shoes.
Smothered in either Takashi’s favoured flower print or a lesser known skull pattern, each insole is tagged with an image of the artist’s dog, Pom, who sits atop Vans’ logo in the collaborative branding. The line is accompanied by three corresponding tees and a small run of skate decks (not pictured); while here you can catch a first look at the animated trailer.
