This is Nottingham --

A HOMELESS man was jailed for five years after coshing a pub worker with a boulder in a sock.

Joseph Scott's victim was listening to music and unaware he was being stalked as he walked home, a court heard.

Despite suffering bleeding and being concussed, he chased his attackers.

Scott, 19, got away but later told police: "I can't believe he got up. His eye was bleeding. I can't believe he chased us."

A second man denied taking part in the robbery at 10.50pm on August 15, in Leeming Street, Mansfield, and was cleared. Scott admitted the offence, having an offensive weapon and burgling a house in South Normanton, near Alfreton, on June 20.

Recorder Stephen Linehan QC told Scott: "You recognised the seriousness almost from the moment you did it. You made a really dangerous weapon.

"You found a man walking home wearing headphones and recognised he would not hear you. It was a matter of chance the blow struck the side of his head.

"It felled him. It could easily have killed him or caused irreparable damage," he added at Derby Crown Court.

Laura Pitman, prosecuting, said the robbery took place when the victim had just finished working at a bar in Mansfield. After being knocked to the ground, he tried to protect himself while Scott "hit him a number of times." Another male stood nearby but did not get involved.

"The victim, being rather brave, decided to give chase but sadly had to stop a short distance later because he started feeling unwell and unsteady on his feet," said Miss Pitman. The offenders took his iphone.

He was treated for severe concussion at King's Mill Hospital and later told police he would be "fearful of walking home alone because of the terrifying incident."

"He said he and his friend got rid of clothing and got rid of the sock containing the boulder," added Miss Pitman.

Joe Harvey, mitigating, told the court: "From the age of 17, [Scott] actively engaged with the travelling community and sadly very quickly became indoctrinated into a lifestyle where this is what they do to get by.

"Mr Scott isn't a wordsmith and the best he can say is repeating the word 'appalling' to me time after time. He is filled with remorse."

At the time Scott, had a £200 drug debt, added Mr Harvey. Reported by This is 10 hours ago.
