Tim Cook was right to fight the FBI

Tim Cook was right to fight the FBI In this day and age of fast food journalism, with technology pundits vapidly expunging their opinions on that day’s technology fare, we sometimes miss something that is truly seminal that happened in our industry. That “something” would be Tim Cook’s refusal to turn over the keys to the kingdom – the security of the iPhone itself – to Federal authorities. The goal of these government agencies was to secure a skeleton key that would allow unfettered access to Apple devices, in important cases that would help solve crimes. Ultimately, it is widely believed that recent leaks of software backdoors made…

MANILA, Philippines, June 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --  While the dawn of e-commerce has opened up a world of opportunity for entrepreneurs and business owners, it has also raised the bar in terms of competition. In many ways, sellers face large challenges when it comes to gaining attention, attracting customers, and most importantly, closing sales.Super Seller Sale June 19 - 22

From June 19 - 22, Lazada will be launching a sale campaign called the Super Sellers Sale, featuring top sellers that have made it big on the online platform. Last but certainly not the least, Lazada's fulfillment process leaves sellers worry-free. Once a sale is closed, Lazada takes care of delivery, and even offers free returns. By equipping them with the tools that they need, Lazada provides sellers the opportunity to turn themselves into Super Sellers.

REPORT: Europe plans to hit Google with a €1 billion-plus fine over its shopping tool (GOOG)

REPORT: Europe plans to hit Google with a €1 billion-plus fine over its shopping tool (GOOG) The European Commission may hit Google with a record fine of over €1 billion (£874 million) over antitrust issues, according to a report from The Financial Times.

The European institution has accused the Californian technology giant of promoting its own shopping service in its search results over those of its competitors, alongside two other antitrust investigations: One over Android, its mobile operating system, and another relating to its online search advertising business.

The FT reports that an announcement on the the shopping case will be made "in the coming weeks," and Google may be slapped with a fine of more than €1 billion.

It's a move that seems likely to further erode already tense relationships between American tech giants and the European regulators. Last year, Apple was hit with a record €13 billion (£11.3 billion) tax bill after the Commission, led by commissioner Margrethe Vestager, ruled its tax arrangements in Ireland amounted to "state aid." (Apple and Ireland both challenge this.) This rocky relationship stretches back a decade, with the landmark antitrust case against Microsoft in in the 00's.

Google did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment, but has previously denied any wrongdoing.

In a blog post published in November 2016, Google general counsel Kent Walker argued that the European Commission, in preparing its original complaint, "failed to take into account the competitive significance of companies like Amazon and the broader dynamics of online shopping. Our response demonstrated that online shopping is robustly competitive, with lots of evidence supporting the common-sense conclusion that Google and many other websites are chasing Amazon, by far the largest player on the field."

He repeatedly pointed to Amazon while challenging the Commission's argument, highlighting that one-third of online consumers in Germany start on Amazon ("versus 14.3% with Google").

"There is simply no meaningful correlation between the evolution of our search services and the performance of price comparison sites," he wrote. "Meanwhile, over those same ten years, a rapidly increasing amount of traffic flowed from our search pages to popular sites like Amazon and eBay as they expanded in Europe, hardly a sign of our 'favouring' our own ads."

Forget the iPhone 8, Chinese Phone to Get Fingerprint Sensor in the Screen While both Apple and Samsung are struggling to find a way to integrate the fingerprint sensor in the display, a Chinese company is very close to launching a model featuring this technology. Chinese firm Vivo is currently giving the finishing touches to a model called X9 Plus and expected to come with a fingerprint reader integrated right into the display, thus eliminating the need for a physical home button or for a dedicated sensor on the back of the phone. While at this point little is known about this new Vivo model, it’s believed it’ll launch on June 28 at the Shanghai MWC conference, with sales to begin next month. Apple to offer it on the iPhone 8, Samsung late to the party As far as fingerprint sensors integrated into the display go, Apple is likely to be the first major company offering such a technology, with the upcoming iPhone 8 very li... Over the past few years, rumors of a self-driving car have swirled around Apple with more intensity than almost any putative product since the iPhone. It remains unclear whether or not the company will build an entire car, but the fact that the company is interested in technologies that support a self-driving car is no longer under dispute.

In a Bloomberg TV interview posted this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company views autonomous systems as a major area of interest, describing it as a “core technology.”

The biggest question regarding both Apple and Samsung's upcoming flagship phones is currently this: Will they come with a fingerprint reader embedded into the screen?

And while the jury is still out on both the upcoming iPhone 8 and Samsung's Note 8, a new report claims that the first phone maker to launch a phone with this feature is China's Vivo.

SEE ALSO: Samsung will reportedly drop the Galaxy Note 8 early to undercut the iPhone 8

The report, unearthed by Android Authority, comes from researcher Jiutang Pan, who shared his intelligence on Weibo.

According to Pan, Vivo may release a phone with a fingerprint scanner inside the screen in the next few months. Apple's iPhone 8 and Samsung's Note 8 aren't expected before September. Pan thinks that the Note 8 will not have this feature at all, while Apple will be the first "foreign"— i.e., outside of China — manufacturer to launch this feature.  Read more...

Apple is looking at ways to put people’s entire medical history onto their iPhones, carry that data with them and easily share it with doctors. Medical records remain an unsolved challenge for the healthcare industry. A lot of medical data is still stored on paper, and gets faxed between doctors. Digital health databases store some records, but patients can run into problems when they see a doctor outside of their normal hospital, see multiple doctors who use competing databases, or if they have… Reported by bizjournals 38 minutes ago.

Have Wireless Charging And Waterproofing Just Been Confirmed For The iPhone 8? by Graham Pierrepoint -

Time is pressing on, and, of course, for Apple fans that will mean less time to wait for news on the next handset in the hugely popular iPhone range to be revealed. The iPhone 7 was unveiled last fall to some division, with criticism leveled at the relative lack of innovation in the device in comparison with previous devices in the product line – meaning that, arguably, Apple will be looking to knock their next phone out of the park. The supposed next installment in the line-up is facing all manner of speculation – even on its name, which has been referred to variously as either the iPhone Version or, rather simply, iPhone 8.

Speculation has been rife as to what features could possibly await future iPhone 8 users – how can you improve on a device which is widely regarded as the market leader? While the iPhone has been around for considerable years now and continues to be extraordinarily popular both in the East and the West – it remains to be said that the series of handsets is due something of a revolution in design. Therefore, Apple fans will likely find news regarding the forthcoming device somewhat exciting.

According to Wistron, responsible for supplying parts for iPhone construction – who are based in Taiwan – it appears that both wireless charging and device waterproofing will become standard for the next handset to be revealed, likely later this year. The news comes derived from a report from Wistron CEO Robert Hwang, who advised shareholders that ‘new features like waterproof and wireless charging now require some different testing’. The comments come as the iPhone 8 continues to be shrouded in mystery – and while the details are being referred to as a leak, they do somewhat confirm that Apple’s supposed focus on wireless charging may in fact bear fruit after all.

Certainly, for iPhone owners, the introduction of waterproofing and wireless charging will alter matters a fair bit – and may also encourage the brand to once again stick their necks out ahead of a more challenging market. Since Apple’s rise in the smartphone game, rivals in Sony, Huawei, Samsung and HTC have continued to innovate – making the market more than a mere one-horse race. With the all-encompassing Google having recently thrown their hat into the smartphone ring too – it remains to be seen who will be the ultimate victor in this hugely competitive market.

iPhone 8 Leak Reveals Bezel-Less Display, Top Bar with Facial Recognition Camera Apple remains tight-lipped on everything iPhone 8, but the closer we get to the rumored launch in the fall, the more leaks seem to be pointing to major changes in terms of design. This time, @VenyaGeskin1, who has a good track on iPhone leaks, has discovered some alleged iPhone 8 screen protectors that provide us with an early look at the new design of Apple’s flagship device. Specifically, the screen protectors appear to confirm that the next iPhone will come with a bezel-less display, an approach that was already embraced by Samsung for its Galaxy S8 lineup and presumably for the upcoming Note 8 phablet as well. With narrow bezels, Apple can offer a bigger screen in a chassis that has almost the same dimensions as the one of the existing 4.7-inch model. So it’s a bigger display in a smaller phone, which for Apple users who want to stick with the original iPhone is an offer they can hardly r... Reported by Softpedia 6 hours ago.
