London trio *Ekkoes* make synth pop, but with an artful edge. New single ‘Last Breath’ makes this explicit, taking the tale of Veronica Micle as its inspiration.
The doomed Romanian poet struggled to be beside her lover, fellow poet Mihai Eminescu. Mihai committed suicide in 1883, while Veronica retired to a remote monastery, where she tragically took her own life a mere three months later.
Iconic figures in Romanian literature, their lives and loves now serve as the inspiration for ‘Last Breath’. A ‘Romeo and Juliet’ fable, the cool, crisp mechanised production only serves to underline the song’s nascent romanticism.
